where the Heart is
For us, they are all equal, have no nationality and are at home everywhere. But they are not all the same, they are individuals and have a permanent home to which they always return. For us they are a anonymous mass. Just like the thousands of people we meet everyday on the city streets.
We are like pigeons that are born into a place and make a home for themselves. But we do not see us as such. We see ourselves with a cultural, social, ethical background and I became extremely aware of this when I witnessed first hand the political unrest between Catalans and Spaniards, the extreme extent of which I was not aware of until then. Visually you can't tell if a person is from Catalonia or Spain but they define themselves by their origin.
Our view of fellow human beings is not like our view of pigeons, although we are like them ourselves, we imagine us to be different through our learned language, way of life and opinion.
The collage consists of 66 unique pigeons, all of which were photographed with my smartphone at different places in Barcelona and then removed from the background using Photoshop and a graphics tablet.

entry description
During my semester abroad in Barcelona, I became more aware than ever that home can be everywhere, no matter how far away from your origin. There are things all over the world that are always the same. I don't mean fast food chains or car brands. I see pigeons as a powerful symbol of that. Pigeons look the same everywhere, sound the same and behave the same. It feels like home to see and hear them. For us, they are all equal, have no nationality and are at home everywhere. But they are not all the same, they are individuals and have a permanent home to which they always return. For us they are a anonymous mass. Just like the thousands of people we meet everyday on the city streets.
