Isolation in the Spotlight
Isolation and lack of social interaction were the topics I struggled with the most this year. As a reaction to these emotions, caused by covid-19 and the lockdown, I started a photographic series showing the emptiness of my most frequented, but now for months closed, coffee places.
Cafés were designed to be filled by people. But what happens if there are no guests ? People were designed to interact with other people. But what happens if there are no other people ?
The café’s isolated, guest-free interior is used as a parallel to our isolated, social-interactions-free heart.
There was a perfectly square historical plaza enclosed by arcades on all its sides at the place where I grew up. The town was surrounded by hills covered in deep forests, offering freedom and adventure. As far as I remember, the contrasting combination of organised geometry and disorganised wildness is where my curious personality of a modern explorer was born.
