Impermanence

"Impermanence" is a self-portrait taken using only the light of the full moon at a remote campground on Cape Cod. I stood in front of the camera during the 53 second exposure and let myself go. The result is a representation of the ghosts of depression and anxiety that have haunted me over the years. The clearest parts of the photo are the forest, a place where I often find myself alone, healing. The trees leak through parts of my form, in my chest, mouth and eyes.about the photographer
Billy Hickey is a photographer born in Arlington, Massachusetts. After graduating from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst with a Bachelor’s of Science in Kinesiology, he spent two and a half years at Perkins School for the Blind in Watertown, MA as a teaching assistant, clinical aide, and lifeguard. He has since worked as an English Teacher in Spain, volunteered in farms, hotels, and homesteads across New Zealand and lived in a camper van, documenting with writing and photography his experience of traveling across the contiguous U.S. while attempting to hike as many state high points as possible in a project entitled: That Bridge We Cross. In 2020 he graduated from the Documentary Practice and Visual Journalism Program at the International Center of Photography in New York City. He is currently based in Massachusetts and around New England.back to gallery
