entry description
Shot between 2013 – 2015, this series was created while experiencing, filming, documenting and living with Giant Silk Moths. 1: The ova hatches and the larva emerges 2: the larva feeds and becomes large 3: the larva prepares a chrysalis and cocoon 4: metamorphosis completes and the new moth ecloses from the cocoon 5: the moth fills & spreads its wings. The first model who is Caucasian is shown in shots 1-3 as the larva as well as the eclosing moth in shot 4. The second model who is African American is shown in shot 5 as the moth. While I created a multitude of images during this time period, everything was inspired by the cycle of metamorphosis to the tune of current social issues that burden the USA. All 5 of the images were shot on 120 & 4x5 black & white Ilford HP5 film and scanned in with minimal clean up and manipulation. The film was processed, and some silver prints were created in a darkroom that I had built in my former apartment in Ft. Greene, Brooklyn which is the same place where I lived with the moths. Thank you for your possible consideration & time. - Rachelabout the photographer
