Faces of Urban Poverty
But cities in the global south are urbanizing rapidly, and a dark side is rearing its head — urban poverty.
Living side by side with wealthy urban dwellers in a harsh urban environment, some of these men have spent decades and years doing all sorts of hazardous work in a desperate struggle to survive.
They can not go back to the towns and villages they had migrated from because poverty is still endemic there, or doing so would mean failure and shame. Yet, life is even tougher in cities, where they are confronted with the harsh realities of urban life.
For now, they remain on the margins of society, brooding over their poverty.
These photographs are a small glimpse into their pain and struggles.
For me, they are the faces of urban poverty in Ghana.
