Until the corn grows back
Since 2019, I have spent several months working with two Mayan families focusing on the underlying causes and zooming in on the daily realities of living in a place where food is scarce. Malnutrition is an underreported phenomenon. Although we all know that hunger exists, we rarely see the daily experiences of those in need. With my project, I want to raise the consciousness of the devastating effects of chronic child malnutrition, also called the ‘silent killer’, especially since food insecurity is an increasingly prominent issue in the future.
Alongside her personal practice, Lys has worked on assignments for international NGOs, the UN, and several magazines and newspapers. Between 2016 and 2019, she worked in 17 countries immersed in deep food crises. Now she tackles humanitarian issues from a new angle, exploring how it converges in a historical and cultural context. Driven by research-led, self-initiated projects, Lys seeks to fully understand the lives of those she captures in order to portray them as truthfully as possible.
Her work has been published by The Independent, BBC News, The Huffington Post, El País, ABC, La Vanguardia, El Salto, Marie Claire Magazine and El Mundo.

entry description
In Guatemala, 1 out of 2 children are chronically malnourished, the highest number in Latin America. Climate change is destroying the crops of hundreds of thousands of small farmers, fueling a human crisis and creating a new pattern of migration: the climate refugees. But instead of following the path of the refugees, I point my lens towards the daily realities of where these people come from.Since 2019, I have spent several months working with two Mayan families focusing on the underlying causes and zooming in on the daily realities of living in a place where food is scarce.
