entry description
Radici (Roots in Italian) is a photographic project I made between 2020 and 2021, exploring areas not far from home located in the valley of Garfagnana, my homeland. I decided to produce this series mainly as a work of personal contemplation and observation, rather than photographic documentation of abandoned places per se. In fact, I was driven by the desire to meticulously observe what I consider the remains of a past that today is mysterious to my eyes and at times incomprehensible. The places shown in Radici were once regular houses, huts, or metati that, abandoned to themselves, have now become silent altars belonging to a past that we can only observe. On the sociological side of things, life has changed vastly in a very short time, and what was everyday life 50 years ago today may be seen as incomprehensible; but it is not only on sociology where I want to dwell: what I wanted to focus more on was the semiotic aspect of things, the correlation between form and meaning of these abandoned places, and the relationship between human and environment. The goal of Radici was to make a person look at these places as they are today, abstracting the meaning of what they see from the naked and cold cobblestone-made form of those abandoned houses. The spectator contemplates the places as if their view was the camera’s perspective, thus creating an additional (implicit) observer: what do these places tell you? Who are the mysterious back-turned figures, and what are they observing? Why do they observe? It is up to the viewer, the hidden and last observer among those shown in the pictures (i.e. you), to decide what these places want to tell us, and, ultimately, what the photographs themselves mean.about the photographer
Leonardo Fiori is a fine art photographer, videographer, and designer. His studies began as self-taught programmer, but, at the same time, inspired by the beauty offered by his homeland, Leonardo developed a strong interest in night photography. For a short period of time, he focused on astrophotography, documenting space through the skies of his land. He later moved to narrative, cinematic and documentary photography. Videomaking takes a big role too into Leonardo’s life: quite often he explores the world of film production, filming short fahion films or videoclips.Leonardo graduated in Graphic Design and New Media from Accademia Italiana in Florence.
