The Gaze
„The Gaze“ plays with the classic definitions of masculinity and femininity. It questions the boundary between them, which has become more and more blurred, especially in recent years with an increasingly present LGBTIQ* community. By exposing the male, making him appear soft, graceful, and defenseless – identical to the common image of women that has been there for centuries – „The Gaze“ reverses the male gender role and its stereotypical position. At the same time, the male nudity also provokes the otherwise common cliché of „Male Gaze“. The viewer, regardless of gender, is now „The Gazer“, and this somewhat challenges the originally clear understanding of roles.
Supporting this, warm reddish colors are played with to accentuate the shown intimacy and sexuality, creating a mood usually reminiscent of a red-light district. To give contrast and stronger contours, the complementary color green is used.
Just as the boundaries between the sexes are blurred, so are the contours in the photos.

about the photographer
My name is Zoé Volmert (19), I am German/French but born in a small village in Switzerland where I graduated from high school in the summer of 2022. After graduating from high school, I moved to Berlin for a while, where I did an internship in a TV production in autumn 2022 and helped out on a feature film production in early 2023. Since then, I applied for filmschool for the autumn of 2023 and I am engaged in several photography - and filmprojects.back to gallery
