Vanitax looks to modernise 17th-century Dutch vanitas paintings. Vanitas paintings explored themes such as memento mori and the transcience of earthly pleasures. These two pieces focus on the Spanish food shortages and the Covid lockdown, focusing on items related to both themes presented in a vanitas manner. Vanitax also explores consumerism and the modern-day equivalent of 17th-century items. The project allows viewers to look at their mortality and ask whether or not they worship material goods.back to gallery
