Scenes from an Alpine Trek
These photos were taken in the heart of the Bernese Oberland, one of the most popular areas in the world for tourists and photographers alike. However, they manage to avoid some of the beautiful but most frequently captured vistas. The textures and shadows created by rock, snow, trees and sky were ideal subjects for black and white photography. Days spent on the trail did not always mean traditional times or lighting conditions for landscape photography. However, the ever changing weather of the mountains, and an embrace of lesser known peaks, provided plenty of drama.

entry description
In July and August of 2023, we set out for a trek on a portion of the Via Alpina. This trail crosses all of Switzerland, as well as the rest of the European range, but we set our sights on the beautiful Bernese Oberland in the heart of it all. My wife and I decided on an inn to inn trek for the seven stages from Altdorf to Griesalp. Each morning we dropped our suitcases in the lobby of our hotel and headed out with the sole goal of making it to our next hotel (and luggage) by evening. Along the way we passed some of the most breathtaking scenery either of us had ever seen. These photos were taken in the heart of the Bernese Oberland, one of the most popular areas in the world for tourists and photographers alike. about the photographer
American conductor Gregory Wolynec is an enthusiast photographer with a passion for landscape, nature and travel photography. In 2019, he transitioned to film photography focused on a classic medium format system camera. This was inspired by youthful fascination with Ansel Adams' work, the beauty of his native Vermont and a long planned trip to some of the majestic national parks of the American west. His work employs bold contrast of light and dark to give the viewer sense of the majesty of the scenes he attempts to capture.back to gallery
