The Manifest
The model's historical costume defines her as hetero-normative, yet closer inspection of her appearance reveals the costs of conformity and convention. Her averted gaze and painted hands mock the grace of her garments which are designed to constrict and confine the female body. She appears ascendant, carried aloft by the clouds as if heavenward. Her feet have all but disappeared-robbed even of locomotion, she is unravelling; escaping the representations of 'authentic' gender and asserting an entirely individual womanhood _ one that seems to be as natural as the clouds.
In 2014 I received my Masters in Documentary photography from Sydney College of the Arts.
Parallel to my arts practice I have worked for many years as production photographer for Australia's leading theatre and dance companies. From 2006-2018 I was the International Tour Photographer for The Australian Ballet, travelling to London, Tokyo, Paris, New York, Beijing documenting one of Australia's principal performing arts companies.
I also work in the Film and Television Industry as a Stills Photographer. Since 1996 my credits include "Shine", "Star Wars-Ep2", "Charlotte's Web", "Top of the Lake", "Carmen".

entry description
This portrait reflects on gender identity and the role contemporary photographic portraiture plays in the representation of the 'female' image. Does it capture or construct identity? The model's historical costume defines her as hetero-normative, yet closer inspection of her appearance reveals the costs of conformity and convention.
