Depending on the lunar calendar and superstitious calculations, a few days after 22nd Dec (Winter Solstice) is a propitious day and suitable for big butchering. This is an important festival as villagers preparing the meat to be smoked for the most important day of the year, the Spring Festival, also known as Chinese New Year. The whole process is performed mostly by the father of the family with all other male family members helping out. It may seem cruel for the outside world but it is a day filled with happiness for the whole village family. People treat the animal with great respect and believe its sacrifice will bring prosperity in the New Year.about the photographer
