Overfishing
Gannets following the 140-meter German flagged trawler Maartje Theadora, owned by Dutch company PFA.
Big industrial fishing boats like this one has a capacity to fish up to 300 tons per day, which corresponds to about 1 million meals. Maartje Theadora has a cargo space of 6,000 tons.
In addition many of these boats sort their catch, and throw back dead or dying fish to increase the market value of their quota. The annual losses caused by bycatch are massive. European monsters boats are sailing around the world buying up fishing rights and empties the seas without leaving much left to the local small-scale, non-destructive fishing.
