The Kites of Basmane
Flying the kites, typically decorated with national and football icons, is a moment of fun and freedom to young people and their families, but also a perfect symbolic representation of a society where the youngsters, today more than ever, are facing the menace of an authoritarian regime and crave for more educational opportunities, employability and social development.
Basmane, particularly, is one of the poorest neighbourhoods in Izmir, having received a large number of Syrian refugees heading for Europe, during the last years. Since then, kites became not only one of the favorites occupations of turkish children, but also a opportunity of interaction between turkish children and the newly arrived syrians, overcoming cultural and language boundaries.
I’ve training in photojournalism with CENJOR (Porto), photography in IPF (Porto) and an internship at Global Imagens Agency (Porto).
Currently I live and work as a freelance photographer in Porto.
